Writing Starter 54

A woman who sees ghosts checks herself into a mental health hospital, not realizing that the facility has been closed for almost 30 years. Describe what happens on the woman’s first night in the institution.

She gets attacked by various ghosts. There is one holding an ax, one who looks like her grandmother but obviously isn't, and even some animal ones. She goes totally crazy and runs out of the mental hospital screaming. She runs and runs until eventually she gets hit by a car and dies. The end.

I decide to keep the magic wand secret forever. I would use it to make myself invisible and see what other people say when I am not around. I would also use it to stop time so that I could sleep for a while.  Basically I would use it to make my life easier, like use it to summon a pile of bunnies or puppies I could cuddle, or use it to make a chocolate cake or whatever.

Things to think about when writing fantasy/sci-fi/folktales 

1. Build your world. Chances are you're in another world or a slight variation on modern-day Earth.

What is the difference between your world and ours? Think about the class system, the way gender is treated and the religions throughout the world. Give two similarities and two differences between your charactersʼ world and the world you live in.

All my characters are barbies. They live in a barbie doll house type world, so everything is on a smaller scale. They generally look like humans, except they are all almost uniform looking. The world is controlled by the All-Powerful Barbie Queen. There is a rival world, filled with Bratz, attempting to take control of the land owned by the Barbies. Societies are generally similar to those of modern day Earth. There is no money or bartering system, everyone shares everything (so in a way its rather communist except there are so many things that no one is lacking in Barbie world). Bratz world is in need of resources, and this is the source of the worlds' conflicts. 

2. Don't make your characters all powerful. Give your characters weaknesses. Make them bad at something; make them underestimate people on a regular basis. Make them something other than immortal and all powerful, and your story will be more interesting.

Name one of your main characters and describe him/her/it.

Ashley: She has blonde hair, looks like a barbie, and is very preppy. She is a cheerleader. She is rich and successful but very helpless and has never had to learn any skill except cheering, cooking, and looking pretty. She is intelligent, but has not had to utilize her mind.

List two potential flaws in a main character you have in mind.

She is unexperienced at almost everything. She has an uncontrollable weakness when it comes to puppies.

3. Give your villains minds of their own. Give your villain a past, a future, friends, family, loved ones. etc. Give them a reason to be “evil”. Give them motivation, proper motivation that isn't 'just because'.

Name a possible villain in your story and describe him/her/it. In a few sentences, describe what made your villain evil.

Princess Bratz is a Bratz doll. She has brown hair, and is cunning. She inherited Bratz world from her family tree, and is in charge. As a child she never felt loved enough, and always wanted more toys than her parents would buy for her; this leads her to want to take all she can from Barbie world.

4. Use unusual creatures. One possibility is to use creatures which are from actual mythology or that youʼve seen in films or read about in books but with a twist. The other possibility is to use creatures you make up.

Name a possible creature you could use and tell me what type of creature this is.

Is this creature good or evil and why?

Barbies and Bratz. Some are good and some are evil. Just think about how creepy it would be to be attacked by an army of constantly smiling, uniformly made, small plastic people.

She was having a great day at the mall until the jerk in front of her stopped suddenly. She was about to yell at him, when she noticed everyone was stopped. A flash of motion on the lower floor caught her attention. They stepped sideways out of the air, short gray people in gray clothes. She watched them lift a few young teens and some random children and carry them sideways into emptiness. Everyone began moving again, calmly. The parents of the children, the friends of the teens, acted as if the missing people had never existed. Suddenly she remembered she had always had a younger brother, until one day she never had one. She suddenly had a vivid flashback to her younger brother; he told her about this system which removed people, erasing them from the collective memory. These people were taken to be prisoners and participants in psychological experiments. She decided that something had to be done about this sick practice. She went about attempting to educate the masses. She incited an uprising which overthrew those in charge of this system. The End.

Writing Starter 51

 A young girl starts having recurring dreams about a dragon. In one of the dreams, the dragon says, “It’s time for you to meet your destiny.” The girl becomes obsessed by this dream and … goes out in search of her "destiny." She meets friends, foes, and funny coincidences along the way. In the end, she finds out that her "destiny" is to be a writer. Here we realize that this story is an autobiography and the main character is the author, who became a successful writer.

Children's Story

Mr. Fox and Mrs. Duck decided to go to the lake.

On their way, they ran into Mr. Butterfly.

“Hey guys, where ya goin’?” Asked Mr. Butterfly.

“To the lake! Would you like to come?” Said Mrs. Duck.

“I’d love to come, but why are you going now? It is going to rain,” Mr. Butterfly noted.

“But it’s sunny!” Said Mr. Fox.

Mr. Butterfly looked at the sky and said, “look! There’s a rainbow overhead!”

“Let’s go find the end of the rainbow! There is gold there!”

Mr. Fox, Mrs. Duck, and Mr. Butterfly went looking for the end of the rainbow.

On their way, they ran into an evil snake.

“Sssssssoooo… What bringsssss you three onto my territory?” the snake hissssed.

“Oh no! We’re so sorry, we were just passing through. Really, we mean no trouble,” promised Mrs. Duck.

“Sssssssuree. Thatssss what they all ssssssay. I sssshould bite you all,” the snake said.

Mr. Fox extended his paw. “Look, we didn’t mean to upset you. We’re trying to go to the end of this rainbow. Would you like to come with us?”

The snake was puzzled. No one had ever asked him to do anything with them! Everyone was afraid of him.

Mrs. Duck smiled and said, “yeah, it’d be fun! Come join us!”

The snake decided that maybe these three weren’t so bad. “Sssssureee, I’ll come. Letssss go find thissss rainbow!”

The four of them continued their journey, until they found the end of the rainbow. They dug and dug and dug, but no treasure?

“Hmmm,” mused Mr. Butterfly, “maybe the treasure isn’t gold. Maybe it’s something better?”

“Like what?” wondered Mr. Fox.

“Friendssssship,” said the snake.

Farmer Duck was out checking on his farm, when he saw a bunny hopping down the row filled with peas.
"Stop!" Cried Farmer Duck.
"Pickin' peas, land on my knees, heard my momma callin' me," sang the bunny as he ate all of Farmer Duck's peas.
